Transparent screens create eye-catching smart windows in stores. But there are problems with them too. These include low pixel density, low brightness and, worst of all, low transparency. Display manufacturer BOE claims to have found a way to solve these problems with its new MLED technology.
MLED displays have a transmittance of over 65%. This means that 65% of all the light behind the screen passes through. The company has apparently built a 16″ panel using this new technology and achieved impressively bright results. These results are 1,000 nits and contrast ratios of 100,000:1.

The area between pixels actually has a transmittance of more than 90%. The team at BOE used a clever arrangement of wires to pixels and pixel structure to achieve an average transmittance of 65+ percent for the entire panel.
The bigger the gap between pixels, the more transparent the display. However, this is a problem if you want a high-quality image, not just transparency. BOE's optimized layout seems to fix this too, as the 16" panel in question has a resolution of 2.5K.
To put this achievement in context, LG was referring to the 45% transparent OLED displays installed on a futuristic bus in Suwon, South Korea earlier this year.
The BOE panel is apparently undergoing testing by TÜV Rheinland for an Eye Comfort Certificate to measure things like emitted blue light, reflectance, contrast, flicker and more. BOE isn't saying when the first MLED displays will hit the market.
