At the Fashion X AI show in Hong Kong, attendees noticed a certain "alien" quality to the new garments modeled on the event's narrow catwalk. And the designs were not, in fact, fully human. The fashion show featured more than 80 outfits from 14 designers. And all of them were created with the help of the artificial intelligence software AiDA, which stands for "AI-based Interactive Design Assistant". This software was developed by PhD students and academics. Models in monochrome blue masks, wearing outfits ranging from feather jackets to translucent skirts, strutted past critics and fashion designers.

A Supportive Tool
Participant Cynthia Tse said she felt like she was witnessing the future of fashion at the show on December 19. "I think face covering is definitely alien-like and exciting," Tse added. According to AiDLab CEO Calvin Wong, the software was created to serve as a "supportive tool" for designers.
"Designers And Artificial Intelligence Can Work Together To Create The Final Collection"
Wong said the AiDA system is powered by AI technologies such as image recognition, detection and image rendering. Designers can upload draft sketches, materials and color palettes to a virtual mood board, and the software's algorithm can generate sketches that designers can tweak and add their own flair to.
Wong said the system can generate a dozen fashion templates in 10 seconds, saving designers valuable time. Hong Kong-based fashion designer Mountain Yam has been using AiDA for the past six months. And he says it not only saves him time, but also inspires him. Yam,
Fashion designer Yulia Tlili said she hopes AI designs will be more at the forefront of the collection, noting that they are not as radical as the futuristic collections she helped design when she started her career. "I think AI is full of possibilities. It's a really great opportunity for students and professors to really collaborate with this really interesting field," Tlili said. AiDA was officially launched with the Fashion X AI show. It was also made available to designers in Europe and Asia Pacific.
